He also served on the general staff at the College of Fort William and became town and fort major there. William Bollaert (1807-1876) was a chemist, ethnologist and geographer. He became an assistant at the Royal Insitution at a mere thirteen, and worked for a number of scientists including Michael Faraday. He was one of the first Englishmen to cross the Atacama desert, received the Portugese War Medal from Maria II of Portugal and was made a Knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword, and travelled extensively in the Americas.
